The name 'Devon' derives from the name of the Celtic people who inhabited the southwestern peninsula of Britain at the time of the Roman invasion c. AD 50, known as the Dumnonii. Devon was one of the first areas of what is now England to be settled after the end of the last ice age. Dartmoor is thought to have been settled by Mesolithic hunter-gatherer peoples from about 6,000 BC. The Romans held the area under military occupation for around 250 years. Later the area became a frontier between Brythonic Dumnonia and Anglo-Saxon Wessex, and it was largely absorbed into Wessex by the mid 9th century.
Sample :
Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Intermediate pigmentation, leptomorphic, long straight nose, close-set eyes, angular chin and large jaws
~ Atlantid
This is the pan-British phenotype (sometimes known as "Keltic"). Just like in neighbouring Cornwall, a darker variant noted for higher cheekbones and a more convex nose on males can be identified hinting to an Atlantic continuum from Portugal to the British Isles (~Atlanto-Med).
- Type 2 : Rufous, brachymorphic, wide forehead, little and low-rooted nose, wide set eyes, wide jaws, heavy browridges
~ Brünn
