At some time in the 7th century the West Saxons pushed their way across the river Severn and established themselves in the territory between Wales and Mercia, with which Kingdom they soon became incorporated. The district which is now Herefordshire was occupied by a tribe the Hecanas - "Hecana quæ nunc Hereford dicitur" - who congregated chiefly in the fertile area about Hereford and in the mining districts round Ross-on-Wye (known as Rhosan in Welsh).
Offa's Dyke, a boundary earthwork was erected by order of Offa of Mercia in the late 8th century : it still largely remains the frontier between the Welsh and English.

Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Light complexion (pinky undertones, light blue eyes, blonde hair, ...), leptomorphic, long and convex nose rather parallel to the face, high cheekbones, close-set eyes, rather angular and pointy chin, large jaw
~ Dinaricized Atlantid
This type constitutes a basic "Celtic" insular phenotype : it undoubtedly links Herefordshire with Wales. When darker (let's add a rather triangular and "horsy" face) some individuals approach Atlanto-Med types from the Atlantic (Western France, NW Spain, ...) as well as some Belgian types from Flanders. This type was already identified in the Celtic fringes of the British Isles in Cornwall, Devon, North Wales, ...
- Type 2 : Intermediate complexion, more or less brachymorphic, rather low-rooted and little broad nose that can get convex, wide forehead, large and strong jaws, wide-set eyes
~ Brünn
This is the most typical British phenotype which is widespread throughout the whole islands. Most women do show classical "Celtic" dinaromorphism. A more or less leptomorphic variant is noted for its snub-tipped concave noses.
