The area was once part of the lands of the Cornovii, which consisted of the modern day counties of Cheshire, Shropshire, north Staffordshire, north Herefordshire and eastern parts of Powys. This was a tribal Celtic iron age kingdom. Their capital in pre-Roman times was probably a hill fort on The Wrekin. After the Roman occupation of Britain ended in the 5th century, the Shropshire area was in the eastern part of the Welsh Kingdom of Powys : it was annexed to the Saxon kingdom of Mercia by King Offa in the eighth century.

This type was already identified in the Celtic fringes of the British Isles in Cornwall, Devon, North Wales, ... In that sample, people - particularly women - appear to be rather brachymorphic thus linking that type with type 2.
A leptomorphic and leptoprosopic variant is noted for its snub-tipped concave noses.
- Type 2 : Intermediate complexion (light skin, light eyes, ...), brachymorphic, chubby features, rather low-rooted and little broad nose that can get convex, wide forehead, large and strong jaws, prominent chin, wide-set eyes
~ Alpinoid/Brünn
This is the most typical British phenotype which is widespread throughout the whole islands.
