The Ligurians were an ancient people who gave their name to Liguria, which once stretched from Northern Italy into southern Gaul. It is not known for certain whether they were a pre-Indo-European people akin to Iberians; a separate Indo-European branch with Italic and Celtic affinities; or even a branch of the Celts or Italics. Land occupation is more ancient than Ligurian rule though : in the grottoes of Grimaldi (Ventimille) a skeleton dubbed the "Man of Menton" was excavated dating from 25.000 BC (see this video in French).

Brief anthropological analysis :
- Type 1 : Dark complexion, dark eyes, leptomorphic, narrow face, long and straight high-rooted nose that can get convex, close set eyes, large jaw, pointy chin
~ Dinaromorphic Nordo-Mediterranean
This is a classical pan-Italian type, very common in Liguria, Nice and Corsica in France. As usual, lighter individuals (typical Italian aqua-blue eyes, ...) are not rare at all. Arched nose are common.
Larger-faced and more angular individuals are found.
As you can notice, Nordo-Mediterranoid types are outrageously prevailing in Genoa : here's another series noted for a less pronounced dinaromorphic character (a rather straight and puffy nose). Those is a basic Mediterranean phenotype.
- Type 2 : Intermediate complexion, brachymorphic, round face, rather straight nose, wide set eyes
~ Alpino-Mediterranean
Softer-featured brachymorphic individuals are oddities in Genoa. Those very exemples all more or less lean towards Mediterranoid metrics. One has to conclude that typical Alpinoid types found inImperia and French Provence are virtually absent in this part of Liguria.
