Analyses of a Copper Age Hungarian genome

Below are the results of analyses of the CO1 sample from the Copper Age Baden culture of Hungary. The sample is from the Apc-Berekalja I site, and it is dated to 2700–2900 BC.
CO1 was female, and her mt-SNP calls show that she belonged to mitochondrial haplogroup H*.
CO1 had two copies of both of the two major Caucasoid depigmentation mutations. She likely had dark brown or light brown hair and brown eyes. She didn’t have any copies of the mutation that confers the ability to digest milk into adulthood.
The admixture results for CO1 are similar to the results for KO2, an Early Neolithic sample from around 3,000 years earlier. A couple of differences are that CO1 had more of the North European components and less of the Caucasus components than KO2. Like KO2, CO1 didn’t have any of the K12b Gedrosia component, which is associated with Y haplogroup R1b.

Analyses of a Late Bronze Age Hungarian genome

Below are the results of analyses of the BR2 sample from the Late Bronze Age Kyjatice culture of Hungary. The sample is from the Ludas-Varjú-dűlő site, and it is dated to 1110–1270 BC.
BR2 was male. The published Y haplogroup for BR2 was J2a1, but his Y-SNP calls further show that he was J2a1b*. He belonged to mitochondrial haplogroup K1a1a.
BR2 had two copies of both of the two major Caucasoid depigmentation mutations. He likely had dark brown or light brown hair and brown eyes. He had one copy of the mutation that confers the ability to digest milk into adulthood.
BR2 had 41.61% of the K12b North European component, which is less than the 48.4% that modern Hungarians have. He had 35.99% of the K12b Atlantic Med component, which is more than the 27% for modern Hungarians. He had 16.30% of the K12b Caucasus component, which is associated with Y haplogroups G, J2, and R1a. This is about the same as the 16.2% for modern Hungarians. He had 1.12% of the K12b Gedrosia component, which is associated with Y haplogroup R1b. The Early Bronze Age sample BR1 from about 1,000 years earlier didn’t have any of the Gedrosia component, while modern Hungarians have 4.1%.

Analyses of an Iron Age Hungarian genome

Below are the results of analyses of the IR1 sample from the pre-Scythian Iron Age Mezőcsát culture of Hungary. The sample is from the Ludas-Varjú-dűlő site, and it is dated to 830–980 BC.
IR1 was male. He belonged to Y haplogroup N and mitochondrial haplogroup G2a1, both of which are of Mongoloid origin. His Y-SNP calls show that he didn’t belong to N1a or N1c.
IR1 had two copies of both of the two major Caucasoid depigmentation mutations. He likely had light brown or dark blond hair and brown eyes. He had one copy of the mutation that confers the ability to digest milk into adulthood. He didn’t have any copies of the Mongoloid mutation in the gene EDAR that causes Sinodonty, stiff hair, small breasts, and higher sweat gland density. This mutation does occur in modern-day Hungarians at a frequency of 1.7%.

Analyses of a second Early Neolithic Hungarian genome

Below are the results of analyses of the KO2 sample from the Early Neolithic Körös culture of Hungary. The sample is from the Berettyóújfalu-Morotva-Liget site, and it is dated to 5570–5710 BC.
KO2 was female. The published mitochondrial haplogroup for KO2 was K1, but her mt-SNP calls further show that she was K1a1.
KO2 likely had dark brown or light brown hair and brown eyes. She didn’t have any copies of the mutation that confers the ability to digest milk into adulthood.

Analyses of an Early Bronze Age Hungarian genome

Below are the results of analyses of the BR1 sample from the Early Bronze Age Makó culture of Hungary. The sample is from the Kompolt-Kígyósér site, and it is dated to 1980–2190 BC.
BR1 was female and belonged to mitochondrial haplogroup K1c1.
BR1 had two copies of the major Caucasoid depigmentation mutation in the gene SLC24A5 and one copy of the other major Caucasoid depigmentation mutation in the gene SLC45A2. She likely had black or dark brown hair and brown eyes. She didn’t have any copies of the mutation that confers the ability to digest milk into adulthood.
BR1 had amounts of the K12b North European, Atlantic Med, and Southwest Asian components that are very similar to the amounts for modern-day Hungarians. She had 9.46% of the K12b Caucasus component, which is associated with Y haplogroups G, J2, and R1a. Modern-day Hungarians have 16.2%. She didn’t have any of the K12b Gedrosia component, which is associated with Y haplogroup R1b. Modern-day Hungarians have 4.1%.
